Anime Spotlight: Please Teacher
Synopsis:Kei appears to be your typical high school student, but we soon find that Kei suffers from a rare disease which throws him into a coma during periods of high stress or depression. He refers to these as standstills. We learn that Kei, who appears to be 15 years old, is really 18. He was in a standstill for three years prior to the beginning of the series. He moves in with his aunt and uncle since his uncle is a doctor and can help Kei with this disease.
Shortly into the series Kei witnesses the landing of an alien aircraft and even sees the aliens. The next day at school Kei learns that their teacher has quit. The new teacher, Mizuho Kazami, looks shockingly like the alien Kei saw just the night before. Walking home from school Kei learns that his new teacher has moved in across the street. He offers to help her with her boxes. While helping Ms. Kazami move Kei has another standstill. Mizuho cares for Kei. Once Kei recovers he tells his teacher about his disease, he also reveals that it was her last night he saw. Mizuho reveals that she has been sent to earth by the Galactic Federation to prevent the human race from making developmental mistakes.
The following day Ms. Kazami wishes to speak with Kei in private about what he knows. They end up getting locked in the equipment closet on the school grounds and are found there by the school principal. Kei, Kei’s uncle, and Mizuho reveal to the principal Kei’s disease, that he’s 18 years old, and
also that Kei and Ms. Kazami are married. Kei and Mizuho sign and return papers to City Hall in just enough time for the principal to call and verify this as truth.
The remainder of the series follows Kei, his teacher, and his friends through many trials and tribulations.
Cast/Crew:This series was directed by Yasunori Ide who also directed the sequal series, Please Twins. Our lead was voiced by Soichiro Hoshi and Dave Wittenberg. Dave also voiced Subaru from the series X. Our teacher, Mizuho, was voiced by Kikuko Inoue and Bridget Hoffman. Bridget also voiced for X as Hinoto.
Reflection:Please Teacher is a very typical high school story anime with a splash of science fiction. Kei has all the same problems of any high school student. He’s in love with one woman, but one his closest friends in school confesses her love for him.
I picked up this series on the cheap and really thought it would be funnier than it was. This series is emotional and dramatic with a splash of comedy. I
haven’t had to say this often, but if you’re not a big fan of high school style anime with little to no violence this isn’t going to be for you. Also, the whole student/teacher dating thing might turn you off from the series. Kei’s so short his head goes straight into her just when they hug.
Why you should watch: You’re in need of a slightly comical love story. You enjoy a “coming of age” story.
Why you shouldn’t watch: You crave a story with any action what so every. Honestly, there is none in this. It’s all romance and high school stuff.
