The Week in Comics – Week of 06/24/09
Man, a real onslaught of comics this week! I had a ton to burn through, so I’m not going to waste any time! Sorry for the delay, I had a LOT of comics to read and also real life issues kept popping up!
Dark Wolverine #75 (Marvel Comics)

Kicking off a three issue arc dealing with Wolverine’s son, Daken, and his role in the Dark Avengers. I thought it was a very fun issue, as I knew next to nothing about Daken before he was chosen to play Wolverine in the Dark Avengers, and the way he acts and plays his teammates is just cool. Looking forward to reading the rest of the arc! Recommended!
Thor #602 (Marvel Comics)

This was a pretty good issue of Thor, and you can tell than JMS is trying to wrap up some plot points before he leaves in September. Thor is reduced to his pre-Ragnarok power levels fixing his hammer (with Doctor Strange’s help), and he manages to find his long-lost love. I also liked the sub-plot with the human amongst the Asgardians. Recommended!
Dark Rein Elektra (Marvel Comics)

Elektra avoids being killed by the hit squad sent to kill her, because Bullseye (as Hawkeye) is killing off the squad because he wants to be the one to kill Elektra….again. Pretty cool banter between Bullseye and Elektra if you know their history, and a special guest shows up at the end! (Bet you can’t guess who from the cover! ) Recommended!
Dark Reign Lethal Legion #1 (of 3) (Marvel Comics)

Grim Reaper, Mr. Hyde, Absorbing Man, Nekra, and Man-Ape don’t like Normal Osborne calling the shots, do they decide to join forces and do something about it. Yeah, I know, most of you don’t know anyone on the list except for Absorbing Man, and he’s not exactly top-tier villainy any more. This comic is interesting because it’s a story told after the fact, and we know these guys failed…or did they? This first issue didn’t grab me, but I might stick with it through to the end of #2 looks cool. Not Recommended!
Amazing Spider-Man #598 (Marvel Comics)

More baby momma drama for Harry as Peter hopes his fancy Reed Richards made venom costume holds out against Bullseye’s interrogation techniques. Eventually, Normal figures out the suits weakness and Harry has to save Spider-Man, in an unforeseen (unless you’re blind) way! The ending of this issue was so predicable, but it could turn out awesome. Another good issue of Spider-Man! Recommended!
Berserker #1 (Top Cow)

This book is gory and hyperviolent, apparently, just to be gory and hyperviolent. It’s got some trappings about Norse gods, but nothing substantial about the story or the world these characters live in. Not really something that grabbed me and made me want to know more. Strongly Discouraged!
Dark Reign – The Hood #2 (of 5) (Marvel Comics)

First off, I LOVE the cover of this comic. Just looks cool as hell. The interior art, well, not so good in compairison. I really like the Hood, the fact that he balances a normal family with his criminal activities, that he hates using the hood, all of which make him interesting. I really like how this issue tied into the original Hood mini-series, and the events in that book are coming back to haunt him. Recommended!
Dark Reign – Zodiac #1 (of 3) (Marvel Comics)

I never fully realized how many Dark Reign mini-series there are! Zodiac is another villan who does like Norma yadda yadda yadda yadda murder yadda yadda hot chick sidekick yadda yadda snore. Not Recommended!
Guardians of the Galaxy #15 (Marvel Comics)

A War of Kings tie in. Funny thing, I am not reading anything else from the War of Kings crossover, and this is perfectly understandable, which is they way good crossovers are run. This was a pretty good issue, good bit humor and action. Love Cosmo and Rocket Racoon. Also, Groot FTW. Recommended for cosmic Marvel fans!.
Dark Avengers #6 (Marvel Comics)

I think I’m really starting to get bored of the Dark Reign stuff, for the most part. I really like the interplay of all the characters on the Dark Avengers, but there just wasn’t enough of that here, it was more of Norman’s machinations. I did love the solution to the Atlantian traitor though. Not recommended.
Last Days of Animal Man #2 (of 6) (DC Comics)

I have always been a big fan of Animal Man, and his powers have been screwed up for years and years now, and it looks like he’s finally going to lose them for good. I really like Buddy’s interaction with Earth’s new Green Lantern, but it’s a Whale? Interesting. Fun read, looking forward to seeing what happens to Buddy. Highly Recommended for Animal Man fans.
Transformers: All Hail Megatron #12 (IDW)

More awesme alternate world Transformers action, and an awesome fight between Optimus and Megatron, with a pretty cool scene with an unlikely ally. A good read for Transformers fans! Recommended to old school G1 fans!
Detective Comics #854 (DC Comics)

Ok, I admit it: I LOVE the new Batwoman. She’s strong, sexy, vicious, and above all, a redheaded lesbian. She fights crime wih the help of her war-scared father, and she’s got a huge place in the Crime Bible. She was involved with the new Question for a while, but that didn’t end so well. The art in this book…wow. Amazing, just amazing. The art and the page layouts go hand in hand to make some real WOW! moments. Highly recommeneded to everyone, Book of the Month!
New Avengers #54 (Marvel Comics)

I love the writing on this book, above everything else. The art was pretty good in this one, but the story was really amazing. In this comic we witness the passing of the mantle of Sorcerer Surpreme from Doctor Strange to Brother Voodoo, an unlikely choice and one that is interesting, and I hope it sticks. I would LOVE a series where Strange trains Voodoo to be the Sorcerer Supreme. Let’s hope! Recommended!
