Seth continues to iPhone game it up with Transformers: G1 Awakening and Devil Invasion, while Cassadi slips into the cowl of the Dark Knight in Batman Arkahm Asylum, grooves with Chime, continues to battle against FFV, and macks on hoes in DA:O.

Ryan gets wet in the Heavy Rain, flips out for Ninja Assassin, subjects himself to the The Tester, and gets rage zombie on us after watching The Crazies. Mike continues to fight the age old struggle in AvP, watches Burn Notice, gets his read on with Halting State by Charles Stross, and realizes that the American arcade is dead after visiting Dave and Busters.

This week, Seth pits Plants vs Zombies, Cassadi continues to struggle with FFV and DA:O (and contemplates a lesbionic dalliance), and gets funky with Beatmania. Ryan fist bumps over a pile of corpses is Army of Two: The 40th Day, gets indie with VVVVV, and checks out assorted movies and TV. Lastly, Mike plays the full version of Aliens Vs Predator, FINALLY watches Avatar: The Last Airbender and finds it good, and takes some time out from gaming to make Levar Burton proud and read a book.

This week:

Seth plays ‘Splosion Man, Darksiders, and Chime as he is attempting to ride 2010 using Gamefly for the majority of his console games. Cassadi failed to beat FFV, but did play the Heavy Rain demo and shed a few tears watching Torchwood: Children of the Earth. Ryan rejoins the flock having played Valkyria Chronicles, FlOw, Heavy Rain Demo, and got caught up with Lost. Mike returned to rapture in Bioshock 2, played Fort Zombie, watched Burn Notice, and dueled Jim Carrey at Medieval Times.

[Spoilers!] Mass Effect 2: Disaster Run

I’m just going to go ahead and pre-empt you, there’s going to be spoilers in this article. I’ll hide the big ones from view, but if you’re on a blackout until you’ve finished ME2, you might want to go ahead and turn away.

I’ve finished Mass Effect 2 a full three times now. I began by importing my Paragon FemShep Adept from the first game, and got out of the suicide mission with two tragic losses. Did a re-import of the same Shepard, making her a Sentinel this time and got the No Man Left Behind achievement.

So I’d seen how the game looks when you get the happy ending. It seemed appropriate to go back and see if I could devise the worst ending possible.

I booted up a New Male Shepard Soldier with the sole intention of killing every last motherfucker on the Normandy.

How did it turn out?

During the Initial Approach Tali died in an explosion on the Engineering Deck when the Normandy collided with some debris.
Thane died from return fire when the Normandy bum rushed the enemy Collector vessel with it’s piss weak standard guns.
During the planning session, Shepard chose Jacob to be the Tech Specialist and Jack to lead Fire Team Alpha. (Miranda: “You have got to be kidding”)
Shepard attempted to simply ignore opening the valves for Jacob and let him burn up inside the tubes, but that resulted in a Critical Mission failure.
Jacob did end up getting a Rocket to the face, because it turns out Jack the crazed Biotic isn’t that good at suppressive fire.
After recovering the crew, Shepard sent the doctor, they yeoman, and the rest back to the Normandy without an escort. I’ve only got a few people left here! Miranda was selected to be the Biotic Specialist, while Jack was given a second chance leading Fire Team Bravo.
This turned out pretty much as bad as a game segment can turn out. Miranda found herself unequal to the taxing task of keeping a Biotic Bubble up that long, and crumbled to the ground just outside the exit. Shepard dragged her out, but Garrus got eaten alive by the Seeker Swarm as a result.
Fire Team Alpha ran in at the rendezvous point, but Jack, not being all that heavily armored took a slug to the belly and died.
Jack’s last words were “I was too happy… too happy with you.” D’awwww. She’s actually pretty sweet.
Joker radioed in to let me know that the crew were promptly recollected being unarmed and unescorted and are probably dead now. Yikes.
So we’re down to Shepard, Miranda (loyal), Grunt, Mordin, Samara and Zaeed. Shepard chose Grunt and Mordin to assist him on the final assault with Samara, Zaeed and Miranda holding the line.
They won the day, blowing up the Reaper Baby. However Grunt and Mordin didn’t survive the explosion.
Shepard runs out of the base all sole-survivor like. He gets to the Normandy where joker pokes his head out and lays down suppressive fire to let Shep get close. He makes the final jump and grabs onto the ledge, beginning to slip, no one to pull him up.
Zaeed pokes his head out and pulls Shepard’s ass back in. The Normandy takes off, now host to a plucky five-man-band of four adventurer’s and a pilot

So I didn’t quite succeed at my goal to get a perfect disaster run. When I attempt it again, Grunt is staying in his tube, I’ll do N7 missions to kill time instead of loyalty missions, Zaeed will go unrecruited and the Normandy will get zero upgrades.

Short episode this week, as Ryan was MIA due to school work. Seth finished Mass Effect 2, Mike started his first of many, many replays of Mass Effect 2, and we watched Burn Notice and House. Cassadi FINALLY finished FFIV and played 10 hours of FF, and had the time to watch Samurai 7!

PAX East Keynote Speaker Announced!

Wil Wheaton to be keynote speaker for PAX East! I saw the announcement first via Wheaton’s twitter feed, and upon a quick google search to verify found this article.

I’m a very excited geek right now! Couldn’t wait for PAX East before. Definitely can’t wait now!

The Journey Continues: Final Fantasy IV

After finally making my way through Final Fantasy III I dove right into IV. Diving right in and completing quickly are two different things though. I made it through a good chunk of the game within the first month, but soon got irritated with the massive amount of grinding and leveling required to function on the moon. The game pretty much got shelved through the holidays, and I finally got back into it about a month ago. Started doing the tedious grinding on my lunch hours through the work week. I still couldn’t bring myself to play while I was home. I gave myself a three day weekend last week, and Friday FFIV was the only thing I played. I bailed on my usual 1 vs 100 game even. It had to be completed. I wasn’t going to let anything stand in my way, and I didn’t. Last Friday night I defeated Final Fantasy IV! Now let me tell you how I feel about the game.

From the opening sequence I knew this was going to be the best story I’d play out of the first four, and it never disappointed me. There were moments I literally laughed out loud and other moments I cried. /tear It was a moving story, especially when compared to the games that came before it.

I didn’t have an issue with the grinding or leveling until I reached the moon. Most of the game was pretty well balanced. Once on the moon, though, I did have to spend a solid four or five hours grinding just so the random encounters didn’t destroy me. I made it through, and the ending story was totally worth the frustration of the extra leveling.

I told myself I wouldn’t rate them until I was at least finished with the first six, but, out of the first four, this one is my favorite. I have no doubt that better stories are to come, but, as of this moment, it stand III, II, I, and IV as my favorite.

FFV will be started this Sunday. My mission is to have it completed by the end of the day the following Sunday. I’m looking to you, the internets, to keep me focused on this mission. If you see me on XBL, Steam, PSN, AIM, or anywhere else not working on my mission you have every right to chastise me, and please do! I’m terrible at keeping myself focused on one game for an extended period of time, so I will be needing an extra push here and there. Keep me honest kids!

This week, Mike plays through Mass Effect for the millionth time, while watching Burn Notice.
Seth rides with the Four Hosemen while playing Darksiders, gets his Sword and Poker on, and got lost in a world of imagination watching Avatar in 3D.
Cassadi makes sets of three, four, but rarely five in Puzzle Quest, got in touch with her inner steamy love triangle in Torchwood, finished Dexter S3, became saddened in Sims 3, smacked Luke around in Prof Layton, and blah blah Mushroom Wars blah Super Puzzle Fighter.
